Ben also said "I'd note that I have documented all of Maryland's native woodpeckers here, which is not a claim that many places in Howard County can make, even some of the big state park areas. I'd also like to note that many of the birds I have confirmed nesting there are "cavity nesters," meaning they nest inside holes they or others excavate in old trees. Woodpeckers are cavity nesters and also rely on old and dead trees throughout the year for food. These birds can't nest in saplings which might be planted to replace the trees they cut down, and even the woodpeckers that might not breed there won't find food in young trees.
The area is also a "migrant trap," which means that the combination of low tree cover and water are particularly attractive to migrating birds, especially Warblers. "
